The redesign of the east axis of Thessaloniki is effectuated through the REMEDIO program which seeks to promote low carbon solutions for urban routes in collaboration with CERTH and the Hellenic Institute of Transport.
This project investigates the redesign and upgrade of one of Thessaloniki’s main mobility axis through the lens of sustainable mobility – by creating a dedicated bus lane, increasing the space for pedestrians and introducing a new bike lane. The axis, comprised by Ethnikis Antistaseos str., Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, Vasileos Georgiou Avenue and M. Andronikou str. stretches across 6.2 km within Thessaloniki – crossing two municipal territories and leading to the city centre.
After the design and research of the various possible typologies – a main typology was chosen through public consultations and workshops. The main typology resulted in the design and application of different modules according to the local conditions in the cross sections of the axis.
The new design constitutes a novel hierarchy of movement which gives priority to pedestrians, public transportation and bicycles, increasing the quality of the public space, improving the operations of each individual actor and approaching a low carbon future for the city.
